Q&A between an interviewer and the first Konishi Shinuemon who started the business in 1550.
- Q:
- You have a long history. When did you start to make 'sake', and where in Japanare you located?
- A:
- We started in 1550. So, it was more than 440 years ago. We are located on mainland Japan. To be more specific, between Osaka and Kobe, a little west of the center of the mainland.
- Q:
- I see, you are really old. It was right after the establishment of the heliocentric theory by Copernicus in 1543, and just eight years prior to the enthronement of the Elizabeth I in 1558. I don't know much about the history of your company, but I know a little more about current activities.
Your company began to brew beer under the brand name 'Shirayuki Beer' in 1995, and began to make 'sake' in Australia with locally produced rice in 1996. How do you see recent developments as the first head of Konishi Brewing which has long been committed solely to 'sake' brewing in Itami?
- A:
- To be honest, I was very upset when I found that they were going to do these things that were quite unusual in our history. But, looking at our history, we have always done our utmost in facing changes that took place from time to time.
For instance, we were engaged in the shipping business for some time. Later, we real so involved in the railway project. In this way, we have contributed to the community, while expanding our business.
So, I now believe that involvement in the beer business will help us deepen our appreciation of 'sake'.
We have always sought to respond to environmental changes without losing our tradition and withemploying our past achievements.
That is how we have successfully supported our business for over 440 years. Indeed, the true nature of consistency rests with an innovative spirit.
- Q:
- You are the first head of Konishi Brewing. What inspired you to begin to make 'sake'?
- A:
- Originally, we were an apothecary, selling herbal medicines. In Japan, peoplehave also considered 'sake' as a medicine since ancient times.
So, I started to deal 'sake' as medicine to help our local people improve their health. That was 445 years ago.
- Q:
- Very interesting. Could you tell me more about what the Konishi clan has done for the past 445 years. What is the groundwork that has maintained you for such a long time?
- A:
- Certainly, I'm pleased to do so. Please click here so that I can give you more detailed information about the history of the Konishi and 'sake'.
